Key To ‘Network Marketing Success’ Revealed…In A 2002 Flick?
Every so often my kids pop in the DVD of the 2002 movie, “Drumline” starring Nick Cannon.
In this movie, Nick plays “Devon Miles”, a SUPER -talented drummer who got accepted into a major university on a full music scholarship. Devon had mad skills and could just WATCH someone play a difficult combination, pick up on it and play it. But, aside from his hot-tempered attitude, he had one major downfall…he couldn’t read music.
In one scene Devon is being lectured by Dr. Lee, the Band Director, for having lied about being able to read music. Devon goes on about how he’s the best drummer Dr. Lee has and that no (music) class can teach him how to ‘do him’. After a few more words back and forth, Dr. Lee ended the conversation with, “…And if you don’t have the honor and discipline to learn your craft, then quite frankly Devon, you don’t deserve to be here.“ Now, when I watched that movie in the past, it was just a scene…but now, that line has taken on a whole new meaning.
So What Does A Line From A Movie Have To Do With Having Network Marketing Success?
Think about it…learning one’s craft can be applied to many things but here, we are applying it to Network Marketing. I see all to often in our industry that people jump in and want to go, Go, GO…but like Devon, they have NOT taken the time nor the initiative to learn their craft – which is…marketing. Instead, they get hung up on the first part of Network Marketing…Network…but totally lose sight of learning the other part…Marketing.
And sadly, oftentimes when you try to get many Network Marketers to just slow down a bit from trying so hard to desperately run out and make that first sale or get that first sign up and to just take a moment to EDUCATE themselves, they either get upset, begin doing what you suggest but later get antsy and drop the learning process altogether to once pursue trying to get friends and family involved or… they come up with excuse after excuse about how hard it is or how they “can’t” do it or don’t have time.
So they end up sticking with what is being requested of them by their uplines and company and the end result is struggle, frustration, disappointment and eventually, giving up and quitting altogether.
