I once heard one of my mentors say that one of the reasons people fail at Network Marketing is because our industry accepts and allows any and everyone to join.  What does that mean?

Think about it for a moment…

When someone decides they want to go to a university such as Harvard or Spelman or any others, they have to be what?  ACCEPTED.  If you don’t get approved and accepted, you don’t go to that particular university.

When you go to apply for a job, you have to go through a process of first of all, having your resume and/or application even LOOKED at and then considered (where you get a phone call for an interview) and then the decision is made from there (or perhaps a 2nd and/or 3rd interview) if you get the position or not.  And if you do not fit the bill, you will be turned down!

Heck, even Walmart and fast food joints turn people down!

But those of us in good ‘ole Network Marketing? No we take virtually ANYONE!  No interview, no qualification process, no sifting and sorting…just, “You want to join??  SURE!!  Come on aboard!”

And sadly, this is what we as distributors do as well – “YES!  I’d LOVE to have you in my company…on my team!!” *pant-pant-pant-slober-slober-slober*

And what ultimately ends up happening is that we get people who are not as serious about this as we are, we get flaky people, we get lazy people, we get unmotivated people, non-dedicated people, people who quit before they’ve even given it a fair chance and so on and so forth.

Have I experienced this?  You bet!  Most of us have at one point or another.  Can it be avoided?  Probably not altogether, but it can be reduced by simply creating your own set of qualifications!  If your company doesn’t or won’t do it, YOU have to set the standard for your team and who you want to (or don’t want to) work with!  Create your own set of interview questions that you ask those who express an interest in joining your company via your team.  For example, find out if they have been involved in 3 or more network marketing companies in the past 6 months – THIS is a red flag because they are probably opportunity hoppers who jump from deal to deal whenever the grass looks greener some place else…do you want that on your team?

So here is a list of sample questions:

1.  So, have you ever been involved in Network Marketing before?  If yes, what companies…how long ago?  What were your experiences?  Why did you leave them?

2. What piques your interest into the whole Network Marketing industry?

3.  What type of income are you accustomed to making and what are you looking/desiring to make?

And there are definitely others that can be asked, those are just examples.  You will want to be relaxed and natural when asking, not sounding “scripted”.  The more you do it, the better you will get at it.  You may also find that you won’t need to interview every person, mainly those who are red personalities and are already successful, leaders…your “sharks”.

So the next time you come across someone who shows an interest in joining your company, whether they are someone you invited to take a look and they express an interest or if they just come to YOU, out of the blue to express an interest; mentally posture yourself as the interviewer, the person who holds the keys, the leader and qualify your prospects to make sure they are someone you actually want to work with rather than accepting any and everyone!
