Previously, I gave a little insight into the “loss leader strategy” and how we see it being used every single day by other types of businesses.  To briefly recap:

- you see it when grocery stores advertise a $1.99 gallon of milk to lure customers into the store, knowing that most of them will end up spending more than $1.99.

- you see it when fast food restaurants advertise a $1.00 sandwich, knowing that when customers come in they will end up buying more food items.

- you also see it when pizza places offer 3 or more pizzas for $5 each – they are taking a “loss” by offering such deals but they are betting on people taking them up on the offer for wings, breadsticks and/or soda

But what I DIDN’T talk about in that previous post was why Network Marketers are not using this strategy and why they should!

So why aren’t Network Marketers applying the loss leader strategy to their businesses?

There are a few reasons, one mainly being that most simply do not know better.  But I’ll also tell you one other major reason why and it may be harsh, but it’s true…most Network Marketers suffer from a severe case of being too darned desperate!  They want to promote their business up front even if it’s detrimental to their business.  They’d rather keep pitching their deal to any and everyone who’ll listen (and even those who won’t) instead of offering an upfront, free-to-low cost SOLUTION to the problems that their target market (other Network Marketers) face in their business.

I have personally spoken with Network Marketers who, when I suggest to them that they should NOT lead with their company but rather lead with a loss leader or funded proposal, turn their noses up at the idea and even get a little bent out of shape!   I’m guessing because in their mind they’re saying, “I signed on to push this business and that’s what I’m going to do!

But the highly-successful marketers know better!  And to give the benefit of the doubt, I will admit that at one time I was that way…I’m sure most of us can attest to that if we look back and be honest; however, when you learn better…be willing to step outside of the box and out of your comfort zone and do what 97% of Network Marketers won’t do and what the successful 3% have done!

There is a “secret” strategy that many businesses know about and use that you either don’t know or…you know but for whatever reason you’re not using it in your business.  It’s called the “loss leader strategy”.

“Loss Leader? What the heck is that?”

GSP0010608_VeerThink about the last time you read the circular mailers and saw, “One Gallon of Milk Only $1.99  So, you see it and make a mad dash to the store to take advantage of this deal because your family LOVES milk…cookies and milk, cereal and milk, milk by the glassful, period!  You arrive at the store and you head for the dairy aisle and on the way, you notice a display with boxes of cereal that are also on special – “Buy One, Get One FREE”!  So you toss four or so boxes of that into your cart.

Now you’re off to get the milk… you grab about two gallons instead of just one and on your way to the check out stand, you see a few more items that you “need”.

SIP2004695_VeerBy the time you walk out of the store, you are going over your receipt and realize that what started out as a run to spend around $4.00 for a couple gallons of milk has turned into $40 for about 10 or more other items you didn’t intend to purchase!

The same concept occurs at your local Dollar Store – advertise that all items are $1.00 and people will come and spend way more than a buck!

And let’s not forget the fast food joints!  “Double cheeseburgers only $1″ and once you go for your double cheese, naturally you have to have some hot, crispy fries to go with it and something to wash it down!  You may even find yourself going BACK to the counter to get one more double cheeseburger!

So since we see this concept in action every single day in more places than one and based on the fact that we “fall for it” almost every single time, usually without really even realizing it, then why is it that we as Network Marketers are not taking note and implementing this strategy as well?

We definitely can and SHOULD be using the loss leader strategy, but sadly most are not and I’ll tell you why in part two of this article so…stay tuned!

So, why and how should you apply this loss leader strategy to YOUR Network Marketing business?

The main reason you need to use this strategy in your marketing is because it is a known fact that not everyone that you introduce your business to is going to join you…this goes for both on and offline.  Now in the offline world (and this can be applied to online as well, but let’s deal with offline) especially as far as your warm market is concerned, it’s always best to lead with your product.

Now 9 times out of 10, it will cost less for someone to buy a bottle of juice or a box of laundry soap than to join your program – so in a way, you’re taking a loss…at first.  But it’s also a win because:

a.) You may develop lifetime customers if the product is good, which means residual income for you in that capacity and

b.) That customer just might decide (after a while and without any pressure from you) to join your business!

Even if you were to offer FREE samples…it’s still the same concept in a sense.

So in the online world, same thing…you want to lead with something other than the business itself.  Now again, this can be the product…but if you are promoting a power juice and upteen other companies are based on a power juice, it could get pretty rough trying to compete with all the other similar products out there.

Therefore, even better than leading with your product in online marketing, it’s even better to lead with…YOU!

CYI0101959_VeerIn order to “lead with yourself” and not with your company or products you MUST, first of all, add value to yourself.  In other words, pick up a book and read it; learn a new marketing skill and implement what you’ve learned.  Then once you begin to absorb information that will help YOU in your business, you simply teach that information to others in the form of videos, articles, blog posts, forum posts, etc.  Once you begin doing that, people begin to view you as an expert…a leader.

You will also want to implement a generic, highly duplicable S.Y.S.T.E.M. (to Save Your Sanity Time Energy and Money) into your promotional activity that will not only train YOU in marketing and give you more of that value so you can share it with others, but it will also allow you to offer a clear-cut solution to what your target market (other MLM Network Marketers) want and need.   This system will act as your “loss leader” and through that system, help you to generate income as you build your business and THEN…promote your primary business on the back end rather than right upfront as you’ve been doing and as most do as well!

So I implore you to strongly consider implementing the loss leader strategy in YOUR business today!
