When it comes to marketing your business online, there are certain guidelines and (dare I say) rules that should be applied.
Oftentimes, these ‘rules’ are the dividing line between amateurs and professionals.
Again, this is merely…
A Quick Tips Guide to Marketing Your Business Online
It’s nowhere near exhaustive, so there is definitely much more to it. But this should get you off to a great start if you are currently or contemplating marketing and promoting ANYTHING online:
Don’t shove your offer in people’s faces and down their throats!
How does it feel when telemarketers call your home or solicitors come knocking on your door or when you get spam emails in your inbox? Well, it’s a good rule of thumb to consider yourself before you do it to someone else! Doing those aforementioned things is equivalent to what some marketers do when they:
- Send UNSOLICITED private messages to Facebook friends about what they’re selling – Don’t private message your links, offers or even solicitations unless someone requested it.
- Post their link on someone else’s Facebook timeline or in a discussion thread – Don’t post a link where it was NOT requested. What you do on YOUR timeline is your business, but when you post it on someone else’s timeline, you’re asking for it!
- Opt into someone’s email list and then reply to their email with an UNSOLICITED email – YOU opted into that list because you wanted information from that person… but they did NOT opt into your list so, don’t try to “reverse pitch” them in an email reply. That’s not cool at all. Create your own list and market like that person did!
- Use software to scrape phone numbers and/or email addresses – Ugh… please don’t do this in order to spam people with phone calls or emails about what you’re selling. It sucks, don’t you agree?
Don’t fake the funk… be real!
Too many marketers lie about results or what can be achieved just so they can (hopefully) make a sale. That only hurts you and the entire (sales) industry in the long run. Be honest and tell the truth. Also, keep in mind that things always have a way of coming back and biting you on the ‘you-know-what’… HARD! So if you’re scamming people, don’t act all surprised, shocked and upset when later on down the line, you find yourself GETTING scammed by someone else!
Don’t ‘throw shade’ on competitors just to make yourself shine!
Smut marketing is SO unnecessary and uncalled for. Yeah, yeah… I know it’s done all the time, even with major companies such as fast food chains but in my opinion, if your product or service is as good as you say it is, you don’t need to put another company down in order to make yourself look good!Just focus on the merits and benefits of what you offer and those who want or need it will get it. Let the consumers be the ones to give comparative reviews between your product and the ‘other guys’… YOU just stick to getting the word out about what makes your stuff so great.
DO make sure people find you when they ARE looking for what you have!
With all the “don’ts”, I thought I’d add at least one “do”. We all know that the internet used to be deemed, the “information highway”, right? And because of that fact, people typically come online looking and searching for something whether it’s how to do something, where to buy something, information, news and even laughs & entertainment. So based on what it is that you’re offering, you want to position yourself to be found when they do their searching. This can be through blogs, videos, articles and advertisements.
Well, that’s about all I’m going to cover at this time. Again, there is a LOT more that I could add… but hopefully this will get you off to a good start and cause you to re-exam some things you may have already been doing prior to reading this article.'Til next time... bye for now!
